Greetings and Salutations.

We are finally online after months without internet, the one thing I did not like about the campo until now (yesterday really).

We have moved into our new digs and are settling in. We had some family visit in early December right when we moved in and went to the Amazon for a well needed break. I highly recommend the Sacha Lodge for anyone wanting to go. It is a great place and something you have to see.

Sorry no pics today but will post some next time and will do a wrap up of our experiences here building.

So to summarize, we are in, we are alive and well and ready to see the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl. Yes we got Direct TV, first time we have had any sort of TV service for 4 years.

The guy we are renting from is selling his house so we are out. Moving, or mostly moved to a new temp house until the final move which is weeks away.

WEATHERMAN BLAMES ECUADOR'S COOL WEATHER ON PERU

Temperatures four to five degrees below seasonable averages are the result of cold air moving north from Peru, according Ecuador's national weather service. The cool temperatures have delayed air travel in Quito and Cuenca and have caused icing conditions on highways in the Cajas Mountains west of Cuenca. Snow as deep as two feet fell in the Cajas last week.

Weather service spokesman Alejandro Terán says the phenomenon, vaguada de Peru, occurs several times a decade and covers Ecuador with cooler air. Terán says the cool air should move out by the third week of September and temperatures will return to seasonal norms.

In the first two weeks of September, Cuenca has recorded low temperatures of 40 and 41F, while Riobamba and Ambato have seen temperatures of 30 and 32F.

August and early September is the coolest time of the year in the southern Andes, including Cuenca. September usually sees a warm up that lasts until March.

septic, how is that for some mineralized earth. This is a pretty deep hole. This tank will have to be pumped out every couple years or so.
I have been saying, "one month" for a couple months now, but I really think, "one more month." We'll see. We are really getting excited.

For the 3rd time, twice in a month, I today left my keys in the truck and the damn auto locks shut me out. The first time I was able to have ChevyStar save us via a signal shot through space.

The second time with the help of my neighbor got it opened with a trusty old coat hanger after the signal was unable to work that day. Today, ChevyStar sent out a guy to open it. Upon his arrival he used his version of a coat hanger and opened it. After the 2 second job he said the price for a service call was $50 bucks. I just renewed the ChevyStar (more than $50 bucks) and said I was not going to pay that amount. I gave him $10 bucks for his time but that was it. I could have used my hanger again for free, I thought they were going to do some magic ChevyStar thing. A cab is $8 bucks from town so I think $10 was fair. Oh yea I have a new chain around my neck, with a key on it!

Remember to take out the keys!

Wow, things are really coming together. The day they started to install the window frames, the guy came to run our power and landline to the meter box. We still need the power company to do the hook-up but it is all there ready and waiting. We had 220 run to the house and all is underground from the pole. The carpenter is quite a craftsman; we asked for screens on all the opening windows and from the looks of the frames everything is going to be as requested. The glass will be installed after the frames are all in. The exterior is sealed and painted and things are moving along inside. We are very happy and grateful for the way things have gone, someone has to be looking out for us!

A short while ago I finally had to produce my driving papers at a check point. Thankfully I had just finished all my renewal stuff and was ready as we approached the orange cones.

We have been through others many times but never were stopped, this time we were. A smile, a couple jefes (it means boss/ sign of authority or head person) thrown in and off we went.

I was always anxious in the past at these as my spanish is ok but mostly in situations I know, I struggle a bit when caught cold, but eventually manage ok.

Now while driving I am confident as we approach a checkpoint that we will not have any issues.

Ecuador bans alcohol after 21 die from bootleg liquor

Ecuador has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol for three days after 21 people died as a result of drinking adulterated liquor.

Most of the deaths have been in Los Rios province, where a dry law was imposed over the weekend.

Police seized 28 containers in Los Rios and some contained methanol, a toxic alcohol, officials said.

Officials decided to extend the ban nationwide amid reports of bootleg liquor in other provinces.

Public Health Minister David Chiriboga urged people to seek help if they started feeling nausea or were vomiting.

Other symptoms could include abdominal pain, blurred vision or difficulty in breathing, he said.

Mr Chiriboga said 28 barrels, each with a volume of 55 gallons (208 litres), had been confiscated and some had been found to contain methanol, also known as methyl alcohol.

Police have so far made one arrest, the Spanish news agency Efe reported.

Authorities on Sunday extended the dry law nationally and imposed a state of exception for 72 hours.

The measure was to allow police and the armed forces to mobilise in order to check for and confiscate bootleg alcohol, officials said.

The tiles are strung on runs of wire and attached to the roof.

We wanted a damper in the fireplace to keep out the cold when not in use and really think they did a nice job filling the request.

Simple but effective. Looking forward to sitting in front of this as soon as possible.

Various views around house.

These bricks of sugar are melted and then added when mixing the cement for the fire place. Old school. I thought this was pretty cool. The sugar makes the cement able to take the heat without breaking up or cracking.

The wiring is roughed in, the floor tile is on site and will start soon, water and drainage went in long ago. Almost time to get light fixtures and the rest of the water system stuff. We are still awed and amazed.

Wow, just got back from a geothermal spring fed pool and it was great! A couple of hours and you are ready for anything. I highly recommend visiting one of the places near by and get your batteries recharged.

As anyone here who owns a pet knows vets are really hit or miss. Our cat Florin (the red one) has been in the hospital for a couple days and we hope she can come home today. She was not eating and had a high fever. She recently had her teeth cleaned and there was a tooth they should have pulled, know after she recovers from her illness she will soon have to go in again for the extraction. We hope she will pull through ok but animals and anesthesia are not a good mix.

We will once again switch vets as the previous one seemed good but I am disappointed he did not pull a tooth that obviously should be out. This just highlights it is a crap shoot at them all.

Located maybe 30 minutes away just outside Giron are the falls at El Chorro.

Very nice to visit but be careful as the trail is very rustic and muddy in places. Near the falls it is very damp and slippery but there is a dry viewing area before the final bit to the falls.

If your in the area I recommend a visit.

I finally have my Ecuadorian drivers license. I was quite worried about the test at the "DMV" as reading spanish for me is not easy. I was sure I would fail.

Well paranoia aside I passed, of course the system crashed and it took 3 days to finally get the official license.

I have to say the test was really pretty easy. As long as you review the questions on the test prior you should be fine. (you can by a copy of the questions and answers outside the DMV for a buck or so)

Oh yea, bring a book when you go as you will be there for a while.

Cuenca, a small town of 500,00 is a really cool place. I say small town because Cuenca sits in a bowl surrounded by the mountains, and has that town feel. It is also a modern city and a big working farm.

Every place you go where there is a patch of grass you will see several chickens running around and of course the cow or cows, tethered or not, grazing among the happenings of the world around them. Goats, pigs, llamas, horses, donkeys, you see it all.

Part of living on a farm are the smells and the real life things that happen on the farm.

I am sure it is country wide but since we live in Cuenca you really see it, we live right in the middle of a very agricultural society. Food does not travel thousands of miles, in some cases it comes from across the river.

My point is you will see things you wish you had not, smell things you do not like, and maybe say things you shouldn't. Life on the farm is rough, real life. Animals are food, transport, cheap alarms or guards, there are few pets in the North American sense here. Yes there are some but not a ton.

For us we love it, yes I have certainly seen things I wish I had not but you know what, life is not always cup cakes and butterflies.

If you can adjust to country living and the sustaining lifestyle of rural life you'll be just fine.

So if someone was to ask "What's it like" My answer would be "It's like living near a farm".

If reincarnation is a real thing just prey you do not come back as a pig, chicken, cuy or cow here in the Cuenca area.

Midnight Run

Donna recently made a short trip to the States to see her daughter graduate from the University of NH. She arrived back in Ecuador on Wednesday on the usual 10:30 pm arrival on American Airlines.

I decided to pick her up this time and with the company of my friend set out over the Cajas to Guayaquil. We left Cuenca around noon and made it there in 3 hours.

For anyone with a gps (Garmin) I would recommend the Ecuador map from Skytec. Juan my co-pilot has this and brought it along so I was able to see it in action before I bought it.

We parked at the airport and spent the afternoon at the Malecon after going to the gps store to get my own copy of the map. The Malecon is a sprawling walk of about 3 miles along the Guayas river. If you have never been I recommend a visit. You can google it to see some pics and read about it.

Donna's plane was delayed a bit and we got on the road at about midnight headed home to Cuenca. After a brief 5km stint through some dense fog we were again in the clear and had no problems along the way. Made it back to town at 3am and in bed at 4. It was along day but worth it to wake up at home.

The road construction is done and it is a nice ride. There was a spot where a land slide had occurred with the road down to 1 lane but there was no difficulty passing. It would certainly be a whole lot different driving up in the fog, this would be an unnerving ride.

Just an FYI it is more or less 200km from Cuenca to the airport in Guayaquil. With a diesel I made it there and back on a 1/2 a tank of fuel. Over 2 hours on the ride home are UP, WAY UP hill.

Oh yea the map is $100 bucks downloaded to your unit or $120 for the map on an SD card. You get free updates for 6 months. If you have a car and a Garmin I highly recommend it.

The sun has returned this week to Cuenca. Yes the rain is still here but the quality of the sunny times of the day has greatly improved. It is amazing how cool it gets when the sun hides for a couple days, it can get quite cool if you live in a cave.

It is hard to beat a sunny day in the Andes.

Well it is all over. I had my practical exam this A.M. so school, as they say is out. I have my driving test in the morning but those results are a given unless I crash.

I have to say it was not bad. We missed 2 days, one because of 12 of April festivities and the other due to a power outage in town. I did have to drive everyday for about 30 minuets but it was fun and I learned some new roads.

I still have to take the police version of the test once I get my certificate of completion from the school. Once you pass that you get the license.

I too am starting the Ecuadorian drivers licensing process. Here in Ecuador it is a lot more complicated than when we were in Aruba. There you just show them a valid licence and they issued you one there. Here is a bit more entailed.

Step 1: you must go the the Red Cross to have your blood type checked, you then get a card with your blood type.

Step 2: you have to get some passport type sized photos.

Step 3: you need to get a police report (you need to bring 1 of the photos)

Step 4: Find the driving school of your liking and sign up.

This is as far as I am. I start school next Monday. It is an 8 day course (excellerated course if you know how to drive). I have heard that some people did not have to do all of the practical driving classes once they know you can drive.

My friend Chuck is bring me back a GPS (they sell gps maps of Ecuador here in Guayaquil) so I want to get "legal" before we go on the road to see some of our new country.

Cures what ails you.........

We too, along with many of our friends are recovering from the recent bug that swept through Cuenca. I was told about this natural product when I asked some people what they recommended at the botica for a cold. This is more of a vitamin type application than "only when you are sick" type med.

You can take either 2 doses 12 hours apart or 1 double dose a day, every day for a month. You are then set for 3 months then you repeat the monthly dose, then 90 off, blah, blah you get it.

Birm is designed to strengthen your immune system and comes from the Orient region of Ecuador. $20 bucks for this bottle.It can be had at most pharmacies or boticas without a script.

I have to say this stuff makes you feel better, or it did for us.

Well just about all the columns are done and the steel is going up. It will not be long before they start the great room on the second floor. We are starting to look at tile and fixtures.

We are going to have a hot water heater like we were used to in the US. We had them install a loop in the hot water lines so it can circulate (with a pump of course), so yes you can have real instant hot water. We are also installing a filter after the water meter but before the house just to get any debris and grit.

We also will have screens for our windows. Do not believe the stories about no bugs as they are here.

The walls are just about done on the first floor. They are getting ready to install the beams for the second floor now.

Etapa (Cuenca's water utility) installed the new water main in the street the other day.

We should have our own water in a few days. Wow. We are still awed by the flow of things and continue to be amazed.

Apartment round up

Yea, yea, Long over due. Well here are some before and afters from similar angles. Everything went great and we were on budget.

We were going to rent the unit out but have decided to put it up for sale. We are focusing on the house and want to do some extra things now while they are building so everything will be done at once. I will do a separate post showing mucho photos of the apartment.

It was a total gut job and cannot believe it is the same place when we look at old photos.

Amazed

Last week I went to the land almost daily. Daily there were new walls. It is really amazing to see these guys work.

After seeing how fast things are happening I will continue this regime, at least until the main structure is complete.
We have made minor tweaks to some walls here and there, changing some window configurations and the guys are very cool about it when we make a change. That is a great thing about visiting with regularity, you see things on site you could not possibly see on paper.

Oscar, Ivan, and I meet every Friday to go over things and Oscar and I visit often during the week sometimes together sometimes not.

I know from my own experiences in a former landscape construction life not to push the time table or the workers.

We are very happy with the pace and know it will be built extremely well.

Thanks again to my amigo in Orlando, without you none of what we are experiencing now would be possible. See you in a few short weeks.

Everyday Progress

Here are a couple conceptual drawings done by Oscar. As we begin we will see how these compare to the finished project.

We go up every couple days and there is always progress. We are thinking maybe June it should be close to done. The lot is 1/2 acre, just right for plants and gardens on a nice slope. So far things have gone pretty smooth, some issues but that is to be expected.

I would certainly say yes to building to anyone that asks.

In another life I would reek of diesel fuel, coffee, and cigarettes. The record snows back in New England this year equals long hours and little sleep for some friends and former colleagues. I am happy to report there is non of that here! There are however severe difficulties that pop up now and again that must be dealt with. Running out of vino, running out of minutes for the cell, forgetting the day/ date/ or time all serious and requiring attention. Granted these issues are lighter than a shovel full of snow but are just as annoying.

Apartment update: Furniture going in this week. Will post final pics and a review of the renovation process.

Cotopaxi from the plane

Thought I would mention our trip to Otavalo, Cotacachi, and San Antonio a few weeks back. If you are in the market for anything of the textile persuasion head to Otavalo, tons to see and prices are great. Cotacachi for anything leather. San Antonio is the woodcarvers location with tons of art and furniture, all amazing to see.

That is one of the many great things about Cuenca, very centrally located in the country. I would encourage anyone living here to get out and see some sights. Ecuador is an amazing place.

Something I would have never thought of while out and about, if you are someplace and you buy something but it is too big or you already have too much stuff in the way of luggage have your item shipped to Cuenca. Barbara had a beautiful walnut piece shipped for an amazing $6 bucks. That was delivered to her front door, very cool. Is she happy, you bet..........

On a seperate note the apartment is very near completion. We are looking at next week for things to be complete. Furnishings will follow quickly. Anyone interested in short term accommodations next to Park Calderon shoot us an email for info.

If you are in need of a very good architect, I can recommend Oscar Abad with out hesitation. Renovations, additions, new projects, Oscar is your man. He studied in the US and speaks perfect english for you non spainsh speakers. He does all his plans to US standards and demensions and is a good guy personally. He lived in the US for many years and knows what North Americans are used to and what they want, lots of light, storage, etc.

Well the apartment is shaping up. Ivan and his crew are the best. He is honest and trustworthy. We really are fortunate to have met him (thanks again Juan).

When we left for Quito he sad they would do the demo (during the 3 November celebrations) as they would desturb less people in the building. When I went there upon my return, demo done, debris out.

2 days later all new water lines and new electrical in, all holes in the wall where they ran pipe already plastered over.

Ivan thinks about 5 weeks until completion. Our goal was to be done before the end of the year, looks like we are right on scheduel. I'll see about some pictures.

1st stop before Cuenca

This was our pad on Aruba. A small 1150 sq./ft. place but we really loved that house. The beach, Arashi beach for anyone familiar with the island was a 3 minuite drive. The California Light House 5 minuites away. We could walk to the Marriot Beach Resort if so inclined, we were not.

No grass here, and with the wind it was a full time job cleaning house, if of course you had the windows open.

Yours truly did all the brick work front and back. Hard work in that heat, as you can see below. A typical summers day.

Do we miss it, not really. It was a great leaning experiance and we do not take anything for granted. If it was not for living there we would not be here in Cuenca now. Fate is a funny thing.

Well I just got back after a 4 day tour of some places up north with our good friends Barbara and Howard. Donna is headed bak to the US for a visit so we went early to see some sites.We flew to Quito on Saturday and from the airport took a van to Otovalao (2-2 1/2 hour drive).
We got to the hostil in the early afternoon and were able to hit the big market day. This is the place for alpaca blankets, ponchos, jackets at very nice prices. We loaded up on blankets and got some gifts (sorry mom not telling, you will see soon) for family.
The next day we went to Cotacochi (20-30 min drive from Otavolo) and that is the place for leather goods. Everything you can imagine is there. It is a nice place but on either side of this town like towering book ends are two "sleeping" volcanos, the locals call them Mama and Papa.
The next day we went to San Antonio (20-30 min from Cotacochi). This town is where they do wood carvings. Statues, pictures, bowls, you name it. I was amazed when Barnera and Howard scored a beautiful walnut statue and had it shipped to Cuenca for $5 bucks delivered to thier place. Wow, that is service. We were about 3 hours from the Columbian boarder in this area.
I would post photos but Donna brought the camera to the US for her visit.
We had a great time but I must say it is nice to sleep in my own bed. Donna have a great time and I will see you soon. Do not forget to lift with your knees.

The house has sold, wow that was fast. We put up a sign on Sunday and accepted an offer yesterday. We will press ahead with the house construction asap. The apartment renovations are underway and I will post some pics soon.

We are real excited to finally settle down on our piece of paradise and are looking forward to the end moving.

We are planning on a trip to Quito so stay tuned for that.

Sorry I have been "off line". Things are poco poco as always here in the Andes.

As anyone can tell you things happen at their own pace. We are waiting for the permit process to finish as well as our contractor to finish prior projects.

Chris and I went for a hike in the Cajas and I have some pics and video. Stay tuned as it is on the way.

A note for anyone with up coming construction projects, the municipio here in Cuenca is being very difficult. Get ready to wait and toil with the process. If your are well acclimated to the manana time tables you will be fine. If you are "fresh off the boat" and still used to things being fast and efficient you might be in for some stress.

Just discovered these new bus route guides. They are very easy to read and show the hours of operation by days of the week. They can be found at the Turista Info office on Park Calderon. You have to ask for it, I did not see any out in plain view.

By the way, the guide is free. Better hurry as you never know how long it will take to get more when they are gone.

The terrain features here are really quite something to see. Vilcabamba is a cool place to visit. I am really glad we chose Cuenca as our home. It was only a 4 hour drive from Cuenca, that includes a stop for lunch in Loja on the way.

The Izhcayluma is a nice place with commanding views of the valley. We will be going back.

Orchids.........

This place is a must see for anyone here in the Cuenca area. For $3 bucks a head you get a private tour of the grounds and the production process, and chance to see plants you can no longer see in their natural setting.

There are over 4000 species of orchids in Ecuador and this place has over 1/2 that number on the grounds.

Some fragant, some not, all cool. I discovered that the vanilla bean comes from an orchid while on this tour.

This you actually see flipped 180 degrees but I saw this face and it reminded me of the "Mothman Prophecies" a must see movie with a erie vibe (based on true events).

Last but not least the "Monkey Face". It is amazing to see these plants and I am glad we went.

I am sure we will go again.

The facility is located on te road to Gualiceao about 25 min outside Cuenca. They have many varieties for sale along with other nic nacs and books about the orchid, ample parking also.

Get out there and see the sites.

About 10 minutes ago we experienced our first earthquake/tremor that we could feel. It lasted about 15 seconds. The windows were vibrating, all the neighborhood dogs barked, the cats ran around. We could feel everything vibrating a tiny bit then it was over.

Having never been from a fault area Donna and I were a but numb to it until it ended and I said, "That was an earthquake".

Yet another new experience here in Ecuador.

Dragons Blood

This is "Sangre de Dragon" or Dragons Blood. You might remember reading about it when Chuck went to the Amazon (http://watsontravels.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html)

It is sap from a tree in the jungle. This little vile can be had for a couple bucks in the San Fransisco market. Look for the woman selling all sorts of traditional, natural medicines and various trinkets to ward off evil spirits.

I was somewhat skeptical until I used it. Only a small drop on a cut knuckle and it is healing fast.

I had the cut for a few days, repeatedly hitting it again and again, reopening it. After an application of Dragons Blood it felt better and low and behold scabbed over during the night.

You put a small drop on the spot and rub it in. It almost looks like soap as it turns white as you rub. It dries clear and is like a liquid skin that protects the area.

I am now a believer and will reach for this the need arises.

In most conversations, especially now the weather seems to pop up. The rainy and cool days, people huddled up praying for the sun.

Well I can tell you first hand after living in a place where the weather is the same every day, week after week, no rain to speak of and blistering heat, we will take this weather any day of the week. Of course you will notice we did break down and buy a heater.

In Aruba, if you were located away from the breeze your only reprieve was constant a/c. We hate a/c (intermittently it is fine but not constant). You get to a point where there is nothing left to take off, and your still hot. We had a constant breeze and it was still an oven.

Here in Cuenca you just buy a nice alpaca sweater, maybe a heater and fan to circulate the air, a blanket and you are nice and toasty. We are also happy to see the rain, though I have said when is it going to stop, after living with almost none for 2 years it is nice to have it back.

So when you are shivering, cradling that warm cup of tea or coffee remember this weather is
by far the best. Though it does wear on us on occasion, we will take it.......any day of the week.

Good news, we are off to pick up the keys for the apartment we bought this am. After a small, almost delay things have ironed themselves out and we are on time for delivery of the unit.

Of course now the work begins.

It feels like it has been a long time, as we closed a month ago and let the previous owner stay till the end of July to square away their new accommodations.

Stay tuned for the renovation process. Another update it looks like we will start construction on our house in October. We are very excited about this, the builder we want has agreed to do the project. This too will be shared.

Another thing to bring and info

I just thought I would mention to any of you future residents an add on to your "should bring down list".

It is a good idea to bring down like 3 years worth of medical records (nice to have old blood work to compare and tid bits you do not know or remember for your doctor, dates etc..)

If you have any sort of joint replacement I would bring down a fresh x-ray film so they can compare to any new x-ray. Also if you take a spill they will know how it should look when they repair it (just kidding).

We also brought dental records. It is far better to have this info and not need it than need it and not have. At a minimum I would bring x-ray pics (as new as possible).

And an FYI to anyone who does not know that there are great maps and bus route books available at the info center off Park Calderon. Look for the yellow circle with the "i" in the center.

They have several maps to choose from (ask for them if you do not see). Some show just the historical area and some show the whole of Cuenca. Ask to see more if they only show you one so you can what is best for you.

Ask for the bus route booklet (if they have any). This lists the Bus route numbers and the stops (listed by road). If you have a map and know some streets you will find the routes (this is for the person(s) who is/are in Cuenca for extended periods who know some roads and general city areas or any of you fellow residents who did not know this was available).

Well hope this helps someone out there.

Dr. Cesar Toral

Well we went to the doctor for our first visit. After asking around and deciding who,we went with Dr. Toral. He gives off a feeling of comfort, confidence, and well being. I have not had that feeling since my primary doc in the US. He spends all the time he needs not rushing in and out.

We went to see him because we were due for a check up/blood work.

I had not had anything since 2008 just prior to our departure from the States. Donna also had a bone density test, and hip x-ray. We both had full blood work and I had a PSA test, and we both had a urine test.

Total cost for all tests and the 2 Dr visits (first was consult second was reading of results) was $311 clams.

I was expecting to shell out closer to say $500 not knowing what to expect. We had our blood work and Donna's bone test at 8:30 am out by 9:10 am. Went for x-ray at 11 am out at 11:40 am. (x-ray dept was busy). Picked up our test results on our way back to the Dr office at 5 pm and then went for our appointment.

We brought our medical records from the US also so he could review and compare to previous tests.

We were given clean bills of health (he told me to try to loose a couple pounds. He should have seen me in 2008, gordo!)

We are very pleased with Dr Toral and would recommend him to anyone in the Cuenca area seeking quality medical services. He will be our Dr during our lives here.

Trip to the Coast

Wednesday I went to Guyaquil with a good friend to pick up some family coming to visit. We took a bus fom Cuenca to the coast, cost $8 bucks each. It was similar to a plane ride, assigned seating (number on ticket), the "cockpit" had a door isolating the pilot and co-pilot, and an in-flight movie (really 2).
The co-pilot wipes the windshield when it fogs up and unlocks the bathroom for anyone in need.
It was quite an experiance. Along the way people would walk up to the door, knock and the bus would pull over and drop off said person where they wanted. Likewise people flagged down the bus and got on from said town headed west to the coast.
We went through Canar province which was all new to me. When we arrived we traveled over the Cajas mountains into Cuenca so it was nice seeing a whole new area. At one point we entered the cloud forest, the elevation where the hot air from the coast and the cool mountain air collide. This is where the co-pilot proved his worth. The window fogged constantly and he would wipe it off each time. From our seats it looked like the road was not visable but we were above the driver and we are still here so I guess he could see it. That looks like one stressfull job. The roads are narrow, cows, cars, people all on the road, in the fog, crazy.
It was nice as we went through each town Juan knew right where we were and would tell me the names of each place. Seeing the transition from altitudes is really something. It is really like traveling to different countries, above the tree line, all the way to the tropical coast.
Once we got to Guyaquil (4 1/2 hours, felt like 8) we went to the airport where we found out the plane was delayed until 1am (was supposed to arrive at 10:30pm).
Luckily Juan has family in Guyaquil and we hooked up with them and they showed us around the city, we had "Morocho" and saw alot (I like the Morocho in Cuenca better). Went back to their place and crashed for 1 hour (got to the house at 11pm). Went back to the airport at 12 and waited for the family.
At the airport we met the shuttle driver Juan had arranged to drive us back to Cuenca through the Cajas.
At a bit after 2 am we loaded up and headed to Cuenca. That was a wild ride too. Coming up in the dead of the am. We stopped someplace high up at around 3-3:30 for coffee at a "truck stop", which was a house on the side of the road with a shop and place to order food.
Recharged we continued on. With the construction of the new road we had to stop twice as the road is only 1 lane. At the first as we sat for around 15 minuites. We we got the all clear the truck a few up in line just sat, everyone pulled around him. I guess he fell asleep. The second stop was for at least 30 min but felt like longer. We could see the morning glow coming over the mountain as we sat there.
Finally got home at 7am. What a trip. It was great fun even though it took a day to recover.
It was quite a sight seeing the day begin up in the Cajas.
Wish I had my camera to video the trip. Oh well.

Wow, like a blur much time has passed since we have seen many of you. When we lived in town we saw everyone with regularity but since our move we miss the unscheduled visits.

We have been busy doing various things, land planning, vehicle reg, house/container. All small but added up a bunch of running around. Like a friend has said "Busy doing Nothing" but not really nothing most days. It is rough being "retired".

Just saying "Hi" and we will see you soon.

Yesterday we went to the Hosteria Uzhupud in Paute. This was our first trip outside of Cuenca so when we heard about it we wanted to go see a new place.

It was a great day to sit back, relax, have a chat, and enjoy the good food, good company, and nice location.

The grounds are very nice and sprawling. We wandered around after lunch checking it out.

This is only a peak. There are many walking paths, greenhouse, tons to see. I took a ton of pics but these give you a sense of the place.

It was a nice day and we enjoyed going to see Paute. I still cannot believe we live in the Andes.

Hope everyones 4th was a nice day filled with, good friends, and good weather and good food.

Our container arrived to the house yesterday around 4:30. I have to say it was a smooth process once it got to Ecuador. It was the 3 weeks stuck in Panama that was the killer only on the ground 12 days before we got it in Cuenca. Everything is safe and sound (we packed our own stuff) now sorting and setting up begins. Good thing we did not buy a dinning room set!

Also plan on a couple grand in fees/handling charges after your stuff gets to Ecuador. These fees are not included in the shipping cost.

After looking at everything I do not think we would have been able to buy what we brought for the money it cost to get it here. It is a personal choice to ship or not but do not be affraid to do it, just hire the right person to handle your shipment in Ecuador.

Everyone who moves does it their way. Some bring stuff, some do not. If you choose to there are a few MUST DO's to make the process smoother.

Talk to your rep on this end (Ecuador) and run everything by them. Acutally ask them how they want it done, then double check with them. Do not relay on your US agent to do it for you. You might get a surprise if you choose ignorance over diligence.
The paper work involved shipping to Ecuador was far different from our move to Aruba.
If you do your own checking and double checking you will save a ton of headaches, and some green.
Get references for who you use. Remember to be patient and call for updates.

Odds and Ends...

Here is Marty, Juan and Diane, and Donna and yours truely getting a chance to view the chathedral from a unique spot. Juan, being from Cuenca has many relatives here and that is how we got onto this roof. We also got to spend a good part of the day with Marty, who is heading north on Sunday. Safe travels Marty, we will miss you and look foward to your return. We will try to get a leash law past before your next visit.

We have walked by this place many times but I had my camera so I took a pic. There was a Hudsons in the town I grew up in and this brought back memories of being dragged through the store by my mother, whinning all the way.

This last one is pretty funny. Our neighbors have been looking at this lot and working on finding the owner to make an offer. Well low and behold she showed up to post a sign on the wall that it was for sale with her number. (sitio means lot) The sign had read, Lot for Sale- call *********

Well next door there is a couple houses being built. The builder ran over and crossed out the sign to keep it for himself. Guess what, he forgot to write down the number in his rush to keep it hidden from the buying public.

So if you are looking for a lot in town and wonder why you cannot find one, I would venture to guess this is a story that gets repeated over and over.

In Aruba gasoline was big bucks. I do not recall exactly, $3/gallon or more, but we would spend $50 or more almost twice a month to fill up the Subaru (it would be at about 1/4 of a tank). Yesterday I filled up for the first time. You read that right $16 bucks. At the service station, I say that because that is what you get, they pump your fuel, ask you if you have any trash in your vehicle you want to throw out (the man holds up a small trash can as he asks), offers some refreshments, then sends you on your way after payment. It was the first time I can remember smiling at a gas station in a while, other than the first time I got gas, or hitting a $25 winner on a scratch ticket, even finding a buyer for us for beer in the pre-legal years. It was a nice change. I have been told to only go to gas stations where you see the taxi cabs or the commercial trucks filling up so that is what we will do.

We also took our first trip up the Cajas for a bit. It was nice, but boy I am not used to the chill in that mountain air. I guess that is what the canilaso is for. We also saw our first llama live and in person on the side of the road. It kind of looked like the Merrill Lynch bull the way it stood on a rocky ledge. I was a nice day and I like to be able to drive again. I missed driving a standard but did not know it until I did it again. I forgot the camera so we will have to be better about that. We will be heading to Ingapirca soon and will make sure that we have it for that trip.

Yup. After looking around at the many dealers here in Cuenca, we bought one. This is a Chevy Luv 4x4 diesel. We look forward to many adventures, seeing the surroundings of our new home and beyond.

It drives very nicely and the seating (even the back) is quite comfortable. It is also made in Ecuador. Thanks to Juan and Diane for their help with this process.
It feels good knowing we can jump in and go even though we do not know where, just knowing we can is nice.

Traditional Food and Home Cooking

We had been to the co-op the other day picking up the pieces to some really good eats, and after being inspired by some good home cooking last night Donna went to work this am to make

Aji de tomate de arbol (tree tomato hot sauce), Chaulafan de pollo (Ecuadorian chicken fried rice), and Moto pillo (hominy with eggs).

Shortly after we got up Donna realized that the 5lb chicken we bought, we were unable to cook. I rushed up to Coral and bought this monster stock pot (don't ask about the price) so we could get busy.

Here is the finished Tree Tomato hot sauce. You find this sitting ring side on most tables you will go to where the main fair is Ecuadorian. It is hotter than what you get in town but that is what we like.

This plate has a nice fillet of Tilapia with onions (sorry Charlie) and the Moto pillo with some queso fresco and diced tomato......yum (that was breakfast)

Then the work started. Made a stock with the chicken, then used the stock for the rice. Here are the vegetables, rasins, eggs, and chicken waiting patiently to get into the pot.

And finally the finished product. Wow was it good. I had mentioned great rice in an earlier post but this stomped all over that. A bit of the freshly made hot sauce and a glass of vino and it was better than any place I have been out to eat at. Yes some of you (you know who) will be, when our table arrives, enjoying fare like this one day soon.

Yesterday in the afternoon our buzzer rang. There was a man, his wife, and their 2 kids.
He said hello in spanish and a few other things then said something I did not get.
"No Entiendo" I answered. In broken english he said there was to be a street party for the neighborhood so everyone could meet and socialize. They collected $5 bucks for food etc.. and said follow the music around 8 pm.
Well it was a blast. Of course being Americans we were early 8 really meant 8:30 (we left the house at 7 and strolled the streets for the first time looking at the whole area). They had 3 different live music acts (while we were there), tons of food, and of course plenty of drink. I was amazed at the whole thing. Whenever someone came they went through the whole crowd saying hello. Throughout the night people brought food and beverages to you as you sat and enjoyed the music.
There was a string of "elderly" women in front of us and they are by no means out of action. Dancing, shots of rum, a few guest appearances at the mic to sing, some dancing, they enjoyed the party. As a matter of fact we left before they did
(at 12:45 am). The music and belly laughs lasted well into the wee hours.
We really had fun. This is really a great street with alot of warm and nice people.
Wish we had the camera. No place have we lived before, where just for the purpose of getting together to meet, was there a party (among neighbors). Yea the odd holiday where every ones separate parties merged but this was just a spur of the moment, meet your neighbors.
We also found out that many in the "hood" have spent some time in the U.S. and speak a little english. Newark, Dallas, New York.
Well get out there and meet your neighbors, take a nap if you want to see the end of the party though.

Yup we found a great spot, 13 minute drive from Calle Larga.

These will be our new views from the front and back of the house (the side views are just as nice). Cannot wait to get started.......I think I feel a bit faint.
